I w
as just walking downtown and heard a loud plane. There’s a nearby airport, but it’s a grass strip. However, we occasionally see military aircraft flying nearby, they go up through Franconia Notch and if you’re up in the mountains, they’re likely to pass by below you, which is always cool to see
. There used to be a few A-10's that would do very low passes from time to time, incredibly loud, and sometimes terrifyingly low
.
Today, though, I spotted this guy, and amazingly, was quick enough to get a picture

Neat! That is all.

That’s pretty awesome. I used to work up in Rhode Island on Narr agansett Bay and during the not frozen months we would watch the C130's (I think) do training runs at Quonset Point . They would do low passes over the runway, practice dropping loads out of the cargo area, etc. It was really cool. There was also an air show every summer and we would get to watch them practice. I will never forget being out on the bay, steaming back to the dock on the deck of a slow moving (6 knots!) tug on a beautiful summer day when the Thunderbirds roared overhead. One was inverted and low enough that the pilot waved. It was pretty amazing. I live down near DC now and spend a lot of time on the Potomac and get to see my fair share of Ospreys which is also pretty neat.

It is neat! When I used to go camping on Lake Roosevelt attack planes from NAS Whidbey Island would come screaming through following the lake (which is the Columbia River). Added a bit of excitement to a camping trip.

You are correct in your beliefs.

Yeah, it’s about the only straight wing, 4 turboprop, cargo aircraft still flying as far as I know.

There’s the Airbus A400M, but that’s got a T tail.

That has a little bit of wing sweep, though—

Thanks! I would have said C-130 but only because I couldn’t name an alternative. Guess I didn’t need to!

Somewhere I have a picture of one taken at Oshkosh last summer, but yeah I don’t think the armed forces her use it.
